American Horror Story: Cult is the 7th installment in the American Horror Story television series. It focuses on what is currently going on in America. This season has everything from the election and President Trump to the LGBTQ movement and white supremacy. Cult wants to open our eyes and show us how ridiculous the current state of America is. The leader of the cult, Kai Anderson and his biggest enemy, Ally Mayfair-Richards, represent the Republicans and the Democrats, respectively. The show begins with Election Night in 2016 when Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in becoming president despite all odds. Kai Anderson is overcome with joy because Trump winning is the catalyst of the revolution Kai wants to create. Kai even goes so far to cover his face completely in Cheetos dust to make himself look more like Donald Trump. In the Mayfair-Richards household, things aren’t so cheery, but are equally as ridiculous. Ally begins crying hysterically at the news that Donald Trump is now the President of the United States. Ally’s wife, Ivy, tries to console her but Ally just won’t stop crying. Later on, we find out that Ivy “hates” Ally and blames her for Hillary Clinton not winning the presidential race because Ally voted for Jill Stein even though there was almost no chance of Jill Stein winning the election. That’s just a little taste of the insanity that is showcased in Cult and it’s not entirely unbelievable that things just like this happened on that same night. Kai’s revolution begins soon after. He recruits power hungry people who are devoted to the United States and, even more so, devoted to Kai. Kai gives them promises of grandeur if they are to succeed. Since America is in such a vulnerable state right now and many people just want someone to look to for a proper form of leadership and direction, he’s able to easily recruit and manipulate these people. Kai wants to gain support of the people so that he can infiltrate the government and bend it to his will. He will start small with local government, but plans to one day sit in the White House. To do this, Kai and his loyal band of followers go around murdering people in disturbing clown costumes. Slowly, but surely, Kai gains more and more followers as well as more support. Once Kai has all the support he needs to take over the local government, he shuns the woman of the group and makes them servants of his cult. You also notice that none of the inner members of the cult are any race other than white. This is how you can relate Kai Anderson and his cult to the white supremacy movement or the far right. Ally Mayfair-Richards seems to be one of the only people in town who can see through Kai and his lies. She has good morals and wants equal rights for all, but she can definitely get a bit crazy. Of course, she’s a democrat which we found out from the opening scene, so right from the get go she despises Kai and his republican ideas. Kai tries to befriend Ally, but ultimately wants to get rid of her because she is really his only form of opposition. Ally represents the far left. This season also touches upon the mass shooting epidemic that America is currently experiencing. In one of the episodes, Meadow Wilton, a female member of Kai's cult, decided that she was going to shoot up the venue where Kai was having a rally and ultimately kill Kai along with herself. The episode aired the day after the horrific Las Vegas shooting, which caused FX to edit out the mass shooting parts of the scene. Having seen each season of American Horror Story (some multiple times), I can confidently say that this is definitely one of my favorites if not my favorite. The way they expose certain aspects of society and some of the crazy beliefs that certain groups have and make them into a horrifying cult of killer clowns is terrific, as well as the phenomenal acting from the likes of Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson. It’s all the more terrifying that this show literally takes place right now.
